Things To Do In Udawalawe

Sankapala Temple
Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient temple situated in Pallebedda in Rathnapura district. The history of this temple expands to Anuradhapura era. During the period of king Dutugamunu this temple has been built by the giant Pussadeva. The giant Pussadeva is one of the great ten giants (Dasamahayodayo), who was awarded a Gamvara by the king after the war. That was the Pallebedda Gamvara. Later the giant Pussadeva built a temple in Pallebedda and offered it to Buddha shasana, which is Sankapala Viharaya. This history has been revealed by a stone pillar erected in the temple. This temple includes a Sathsathi Vihara Mandira which has two Buddha statues in sitting posture and an ancient Buddha statue in standing posture. All of these statues have similarities to the statues of Kandian era. And the paintings on walls of the Viharaya, which were painted with indigenous material, also resembles Kandian era. Apart from Sathsathi vihara mandiraya there is another shrine room in the middle of the temple, which is called 'Maha Viharaya'. This shrine room also consists of several Buddha statues as well as two statues of God Katharagama and God Vishnu. Number of remains of a lost history is still reserved in the mountain above the caverns of Sankhapala vihara. Among them, ancient inscriptions and dripledged caves are significantly large in number. Sankhapala sanctuary and its vicinity would be a precious knowledge hub for academicians in thirst of exploring the blurred history with limits of time. Sankhapala has become a touristic sanctuary of both local and foreign travellers.

Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home
Udawalawe Elephant transits home (ETH), also called udawalawe elephant orphanage. The primary purpose of the Elephant Transit Home is to rehabilitate and release isolated baby elephants to the wild. The Ministry of Wildlife Conservation took an essential step in the welfare and protection of orphan elephants in 1995. As a result, "Ath Athuru Sevana" (Elephant Transit Home) was established at the Udawalawe National Park. Elephant Transit Home (ETH) cares for orphaned elephant calves until they are independent and capable enough to be released back into the wild. Although most of the general public enthusiastically supported this effort, at first, many conservationists doubted its viability. To date, more than 200 elephants have been cared for at ETH. All of these orphaned wild elephants are reintroduced into the wild in their natural habitats at the age of five when they can take care of themselves. Transit Home is a lively place. Feeding calves milk every three hours is a recurring job 365 days a year. Elephant calves at ETH feed once every three hours. ETH becomes a frenzy if feeding times are delayed; The pathetic cry and the elephants' charges for milk are agonizing to hear. Calves are generally fed human baby milk formulas. Public viewing of feeding is permitted daily at 10.30a.m., 2.30 p.m., and at 6 p.m.
